Autumn is a season of transition - a natural invitation to slow down, turn inward, and create space for what truly matters. This practice is designed to help you release what no longer serves you and reconnect with your own needs, so you can move into the season with clarity, calm, and energy.
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
What you need: Two sheets of paper, a pen, and a quiet, comfortable space.
Optional: a blanket, candle, or anything that makes your space feel cozy.
Step 1: Set the Space
Before you begin, take a few moments to settle in. Light a candle, wrap yourself in a soft blanket, or make a small ritual of brewing tea—anything that signals to your body and mind that this time is for you. Then, listen to a short grounding meditation to help you arrive fully in the present moment. Let your breath deepen and your mind soften.
Step 2: Acknowledge the “Shoulds”
Take the first sheet of paper and write down everything you feel you “should” do - expectations from others, things society tells you are necessary, tasks that weigh on your mind, or anything that creates pressure. Don’t filter yourself. Let it all flow onto the page. This is your chance to externalize the noise that may be cluttering your mind and energy.
Step 3: Connect with Your Needs
On the second sheet of paper, write down everything you need to take care of yourself this autumn. What makes you feel nourished, calm, and supported? These can be small or big things: a walk in nature, extra rest, time for reflection, creative expression, or saying “no” when needed. Allow yourself to honor your own rhythm and desires without judgment.
Step 4: Let Go and Create Space
Once you have both lists, take a moment to reflect. Notice the contrast between the “shoulds” and your true needs. If it feels right, you can tear up the first paper - the one with all the “shoulds” - as a symbolic act of release. Keep the second paper somewhere visible, or in a safe spot, as a reminder of what nourishes you this season.
Step 5: Close the Ritual
Take a few deep breaths, feeling the sense of space you’ve created within yourself. You may notice your shoulders relax, your mind lighten, or a subtle sense of empowerment. This simple ritual is a tool you can return to whenever autumn, or life, feels overwhelming. It reminds you that your energy is precious, and honoring your needs is the foundation for a balanced, joyful season.
Tip: You can repeat this practice weekly or whenever you feel the pull of too many obligations. Over time, it will help you cultivate inner clarity, protect your energy, and align your actions with your true needs.
